Ikkat has a long history and is a highly sought-after design these days. This is a completely handwoven Ikkat silk Saree that comes from Pochampalli, a small town in Andhra Pradesh that is famous for this style of weaving. Although this technique is believed to have originated in Indonesia, a few places in India particularly Pochampalli are well known for practicing this style. This fabric involves a 2 step process in the making. First, segments of the silk yarns are carefully resist dyed in several different dyes one after the other. Then they are woven to yield these beautiful and rigid geometric patterns using complex calculations.
