Origin, and legacy of Venkatagiri Sarees

The origin of Venkatagiri Sarees dates back to the early 1700s. These sarees were specifically woven for the royal families. These weavers were patronized and supported immensely by the kings and queens, and thus, the Venkatagiri sarees remained a much-favored weave for generations. Currently, the town of Venkatagiri has 40,000 inhabitants and 20,000 of them are engaged in weaving and selling Venkatagiri sarees!

A Venkatagiri saree is suitable to be worn for any occasion – be it a family function, a visit to a temple, or even a casual get-together with friends. These sarees are extremely light-weight, soft, and durable. Although they are suitable for all seasons, they are best worn during summers as they are very comfortable.

Maintaining a Venkatagiri Saree

As with any saree which has Zari threads woven on the border or the pallu, it is recommended that Venkatagiri sarees are hand-washed gently, and not wrung too hard. It is advisable to handwash them with a gentle conditioner in lukewarm water. Drycleaning these sarees will ensure they last longer too!
