Meet the Founders

Aparna Thyagarajan

Aparna was intrigued by the world of design from a young age. As a 12-year-old, she stitched her first dress for her sister Ambika. Her curiosity and passion lead her to think differently. Her eye for detail, design and astute observations are the building blocks of our company.

She has a strong technology background and had a fulfilling stint at Microsoft. A chance meeting with a Zardosi artist during a sabbatical changed the direction of her career. She ideated on showcasing the best of Indian weaves globally. With support from her family and her sister Ambika, she took the plunge and founded Shobitam.

Guided by Aparna, Ambika took to the world of creativity quite early on. Both of them have many hobbies in common, stitching and designing being one of them. There was no way Ambika could resist hopping on this journey.

Ambika also dabbles in the world of tech and is based in the USA. A go-getter, team Shobitam and our customers love her for her problem-solving skills. She helps Aparna with all things logistical and operational. Together, they are the perfect duo who bring in the right amount of creativity and talent that brings Shobitam to life. With both of them having a foundation in technology, an online D2C platform was the way to go about it. Thus Shobitam, a digital-first, web-based, global ethnic fashion brand, was born in March 2019.

Girish Lakshman, Former VP, Amazon Global Logistics, advises our Global Operations, Logistics & Fulfillment. He has over 30 years of strategic and operational experience, with deep expertise in building and scaling global operations, as part of management teams and boards at Grubhub, Sears and E-comm express.

Malvika Iyer, a bomb blast survivor, a social worker, fashionista and inspirational leader guides our social impact agenda. A Presidential Awardee and Global Shaper at World Economic Forum, she has a deep understanding of Youth & Gender equality along with global social work.

Arvind Saraf, Head of Engineering - Drishti, advises our Technology & Platform roadmap. He brings over 20 years of experience in Technology, platform strategy from his work at Google, MIT and Triveni. He has strong domain expertise in Ethnic fashion.

The Team in Bengaluru

As Shobitam grows, so does the workforce! The Shobitam family has an office in Bengaluru where all the exciting designs (along with the operational tidbits and administrational parts) come to life. The teams in the USA in Seattle, Houston, Boston and in India in Bengaluru and Chennai, together are the force behind Shobitam.
